About fiberglass

HELYX uses fiberglass for the production of equipment for sewage treatment plants, pipes and pipeline parts, containers for various purposes. Fiberglass is a type of composite material consisting of a fiberglass filler (glass, quartz or other) and a binder (thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers).

Fiberglass has low thermal conductivity (like wood), high strength (like steel), as well as moisture resistance, biological resistance and weather resistance of polymers. In the manufacture of similar products from steel and fiberglass, fiberglass structures will weigh 2–3 times less.

The coefficient of linear expansion of glass fiber is from 11 to 13 * 10 1 / ° С (close to glass), which makes it the most suitable material for the manufacture of light-transmitting structures. The density of this substance, obtained by winding or pressing, reaches from 1.8–2.0 g / cm.

Fiberglass is considered one of the most inexpensive and available composite materials, while it is resistant to chemicals and has excellent performance, which has been proven by the successful use of fiberglass pipes in various chemical environments. Fiberglass is inferior to steel in terms of absolute ultimate strength and weight (3.5 times), but surpasses it in specific strength.

Comparison of technical characteristics of materials

Comparing products made of fiberglass with similar ones made of concrete and metal, it is obvious that in a number of individual characteristics the latter are superior to this composite material. However, the general set of properties of fiberglass (lightness and strength, resistance to corrosion and chemical resistance, low thermal conductivity) makes products from this material extremely popular in various fields.

For example, in wastewater treatment systems (the so-called VOCs) used in the housing and communal services segment, fiberglass has taken a strong position and has practically replaced concrete and metal. In the chemical industry, equipment and products made of fiberglass are increasingly popular for the storage and logistics of chemically aggressive liquids and materials.
