The Skolkovo Foundation organizes Russia's first environmental accelerator

On August 12, the qualifying stage of the GreenTech Startup Booster ecological accelerator starts. An unprecedented project for Russia was organized by the Skolkovo Foundation with the support of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation and the participation of domestic and international corporations.

The GreenTech Startup Booster environmental program is aimed at finding and implementing innovative solutions in the field of ecology, industrial safety and sustainable development. The largest Russian and foreign industrial companies have united for the first time to search for projects on the topics of sustainable development and ecology.

On the international stage, the event will be supported by partners WIPO Green, Climate-KIC, IASP. On the Russian side will be the Moscow City Innovation Agency, SME Bank JSC, Green Patrol, Delovaya Rossiya, Moscow Innovation Cluster, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, Innovation Promotion Fund, Russian Carbon Fund.

The program is intended for companies that have developments in readiness from a prototype to industrial production, that is, sufficiently mature technologies that are at least ready for ODA. The topics of solutions are tied to the main tasks of the Russian industry in the field of ecology and sustainable development, both in terms of current challenges and the tasks of future development: reducing the carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the efficiency of water and air treatment facilities, waste disposal, etc.

The project is designed for 500 technology startups, but only the best 30 of them will make it to the final. The finalists will be offered to conduct an acceleration program to support pilot tests and implementation, or to independently work on piloting projects at the sites of industrial partners. GreenTech Startup Booster winners will be able to receive the Skolkovo participant status with the opportunity to receive a 5 millionth grant for the implementation of a pilot project.

Arkady Dvorkovich, Chairman of the Skolkovo Foundation: “The environmental agenda is one of the priorities in the work of the innovation center. More than 300 of our residents are already implementing projects related to this area. Many of them operate in a competitive market, their total revenue in 2019 amounted to almost 7 billion rubles. Today the time has come not only to support individual companies, but to implement a full-fledged project with business partners. The search for modern high-tech solutions in such a socially significant and relevant today direction is not an easy task. And its implementation is impossible without the participation of leading Russian universities, major domestic and international corporations. I am sure that together we will be able to implement the most ambitious plans in the field of ecology”.

Denis Khramov, First Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, said that he sees the task of the state in providing tax and other measures of financial support to environmentally friendly companies. These are no longer the requirements of corporate rules - these are the requirements of society. Under the BAT and Clean Air projects, 33 quadripartite agreements have been concluded with enterprises for over 420 billion rubles, in accordance with which projects are being implemented to reduce emissions of harmful substances into the environment.

Denis Khramov, First Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation: “The GreenTech Startup Booster accelerator program is a very timely and demanded initiative. The Ministry of Natural Resources actively supports it. We objectively need a platform to search for new solutions to eliminate environmental damage from production. Such a program is important for the implementation of the national project "Ecology", a key policy instrument in the field of environmental protection, the ultimate goal of which is the transition to a "green" economy".

Deputy Minister of Construction, Housing and Communal Services Maxim Egorov spoke about what the RF Ministry of Construction is doing in the framework of the Ecology national project. In accordance with the task set by the government, it is necessary to improve the quality of water from 50 to 90.8%, to build or reconstruct over 2 thousand objects.

Maxim Egorov, Deputy Minister of Construction, Housing and Utilities of the Russian Federation: “Ecology is the main factor in a comfortable urban environment. We have a task set by the president: to improve it 1.5 times compared to 2018. The urban environment is water, air, parks and squares - everything that surrounds us. Therefore, environmental monitoring technologies and other solutions within the smartcity are in great demand. I am sure that everything that will be discussed within the GreenTech Startup Booster will help us improve the lives of citizens".

Oleg Dubnov, Vice President of the Skolkovo Foundation, said that the idea of an environmental program appeared about six months ago. It all started with a visit by the management of Sibur, which opened a modern research center in Skolkovo, in the laboratories of Helix, also located in Skolkovo. It was decided to divide the work of the accelerator into six blocks: reducing the negative impact on water, air and land, clean energy, environmental monitoring, as well as people and the environment.

Oleg Dubnov, Vice President, Executive Director of the Energy Efficient Technologies Cluster of the Skolkovo Foundation: “We are aimed at gathering startups with projects ready for at least a pilot implementation within a year. Preference is given to legal entities in order to speed up the process of technology implementation. Applications are accepted from Russian and international companies. It is expected that there will be more than 500 of them, 50 projects will be selected in November, of which at the final stage in December the industrial partners will select the 20 best ones for the implementation of pilot projects. We are now supported by two ministries. We hope that other interested state structures will join them as well”.

Industrial partners of GreenTech Startup Booster will be able to conduct pilot tests and implementations for the finalists of the program on their own sites or with the support of the Skolkovo Foundation. Finalists will also be able to become Skolkovo participants with the opportunity to receive a five-millionth grant for the implementation of a pilot project.

Russian companies Sibur, NLMK, Helyx, Severstal, Tatneft, Gazpromneft, TMK and foreign leaders in shaping the environmental agenda of ENEL, EDF, TOTAL have already confirmed their participation in the program as industrial partners. Leading Russian universities RKTU named after D.I.Mendeleev, MISiS, Russian State University of Oil and Gas named after I.M.

In addition to collecting and evaluating technological projects, the Environmental Program provides sessions and round tables at such sites as: Tyumen Oil and Gas Forum; WasteTech; International Forum-Exhibition "Clean Country".
